Day 24, 2006
Suddenly we sighted two whales, sub-adults, one resting and the other tail-slapping. This was a promising opportunity, so we got in the water for a closer look.
Carefully, we made our way across the deep expanse, peering expectantly ahead into the blue. A nebulous whiteness began to glow in the distant murk. The form gradually sharpened until it resembled a belly framed by a mosaic of darker shapes that slowly coalesced into the clear image of whales undulating towards us.
I balked. A gap formed between Bryant and me. The whales were upon us and I cringed. Bryant stopped and the whales dove under him, but they kept advancing. "They're coming in my direction!" was all I could think. And they didn't slow. And they started rising. The situation was entirely out of my hands -- only the whales had any choice about what would happen now.
They passed at a mere body's length and surfaced just beyond me.
Naturally it stokes our fear, the circumstance of massive, fathomless creatures navigating about us so tiny and fragile in contrast. I can't say that I've learned the minds of whales in any great detail because of this encounter and others like it, but the evidence continues to paint a consistent picture. The whales I've met show a keen sensitivity and curiosity. Their grand forms belie the minutely detailed awareness they have of their environments, and their delicate treatment of our bodies suggests an intriguing respect for us as living creatures.
