In 1999 Bryant began a concerted effort to artistically explore the aesthetic relationships between marine mammal behavior and its relationships to their environment. He began with Sea Otters and during this early phase of his creative development he released all of his sea otter photos at no cost to government and non-governmental organizations to advance their efforts to educate and inspire the public. This marked the beginning of his business model, where he provides his imagery free to non-profits and alternatively funds his work entirely through the sale of his limited editions. Since then, over twenty sea otter research and conservation organizations have benefited from his work.
Sea Otter Awareness Week will be celebrated at many locations along the California Coast. Find a venue near you.

The Northern California Underwater Photographic Society (www.NCUPS.org), proudly presents a very special seminar with Bay Area artist and marine mammal conservationist Bryant Austin, creator of “Whales in Public Spaces: A Life-Size Whale Photography Exhibition”, Friday, August 10, 2007. Composed over the past two field seasons with the South Pacific Humpback Whales, Bryant Austin explores and develops methods and techniques to produce life-size photographs of his subjects, up to twelve feet high by ninety feet long. For Austin, the size of the photograph is secondary; it is the personhood of the whale, best expressed in the eye, which he explores in depth.
