This mother and her ten day old calf were exceptionally special to me. The two whales rested in shallow water near our dive base for four days. We would visit them in the mornings before venturing further out to sea and again upon our evening return to the dive base. The young male calf whom I named Little Friday was curious yet defiant of our presence when we were in the water with them. With this behavior in mind, we maintained a safe distance when in the water.
Most memorable was the evening on the fourth day where in twenty feet of water, the fifty five foot , fifty ton mother would swim upside down rubbing her back on the sandy bottom. When she finished, she joined her calf who rested on the sandy bottom, pec fins out stretched like wings; the mother gently glided over her calf, delicately resting her body on top of her baby with her pec fins out stretched as well. She let out a burst of bubbles for ballast and they remained on the bottom as the daylight waned.
