With an IMAX film crew on another vessel patiently waiting their turn to spend time with
this Humpback whale calf, all I could think about was the sensation I suddenly felt along
my back. While composing a photograph of the Mother twelve feet below I felt a presence
behind me. It was her three week old calf who very gently rested his belly against my back
with his left pectoral fin wrapped delicately across my shoulders. Not wanting to
accidentally bump or startle the calf with my fins, we instead hung in space together for a
brief moment until my assistant gently held my arm and pulled me away. The calf, whom we
later named Beethoven, would spend his time rubbing his back on his mom a mere twenty feet
beneath us. As he rubbed his back, he would move his pectoral fins in the fashion of a
classical music conductor.
